Typically a dental crown is used to protect a weak tooth from breaking, hold together a cracked tooth, cover dental implants or to act as a dental bridge. If your tooth was broken or worn down severly a crown can be created to restore that tooth. Dentist sometimes will use a dental crown to cover and support a tooth with a large filling when most of the tooth is decayed. There are other uses for a dental crown such as to cover misshaped or severly discolored teeth.
A crown is a cap that is placed over a tooth. This cap will cover the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, to improve its appearance. They are often cemented into place to fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.
